How to Stop Auto Update of Chrome in Windows 10

    Windows updates

    Updates are important for your safety. It is suggested you to get your Windows always updated.

    But it's really frustrating to me, that Windows 10 interrupts my work and makes me reboot my PC to install their update/upgrades. Unfortunately, there is no way to control Windows updating using the Windows interface.

    In the old days of Windows 7, there was an ability to control updates using a Windows control panel applet.

    In Windows 10 days this option has been removed.

    Why is it bad?

    1. Windows update does really slow down of your PC.
      What if you need to complete an urgent work or you just want to play games, but windows update stops you from doing so by slowing down your system.
      Windows Update can break your work and pleasure of playing games.
    2. You open your laptop just to send a message, but it starts with a black screen: "Upgrading Windows...".
      You have no time to wait for finishing updates. But you can't stop it!

    You think, that you know a good trick, how to fix it. It just need to stop Widnows update service and create some special registry keys.

    Hah! It does not work!

    Microsoft prevents disabling Windows updates using several methods:

    • Special scheduled task (USOClient,Windows10Upgrade, UpdateAssistant).
    • Hidden service "WAAS Medic".

    That's why I created a small powerful utility StopUpdates10 that gets back control over updates to me.

    What's the difference between 'stop updates' and 'pause updates'?

    1. Stopping updates prevents downloading and installing any updates.
      It blocks the Windows update service.
    2. Pausing updates only block installing, not downloading, updates.
      Microsoft allows you to pause updates for limited number of days and only once.
      You can not pause updates again after resuming.

    StopUpdates10 removes limitations for pausing updates:

    1. You can pause updates until up to 2099 year.
    2. You can pause and resume updates as many times as you want.
    3. You can set different pause date and time for Feature updates and for Quality updates.

    What's the difference between Feature updates and Quality updates?

    Feature update is a new version of Windows. It is installed as an upgrade to the existing version with changing the build number.

    Feature update includes new features and updates.

    Quality update contains only cumulative updates to the existing version without new features.

    How StopUpdates10 works?

    1. StopUpdates10 creates the policy registry keys to block updates.
      It is for Windows 7-8. Microsoft ignores these policies in the latest Windows 10 versions.
    2. StopUpdates10 blocks execution of several processes used for updating, related to Windows Upgrade Assistant, Windows as a Service Medic.
    3. StopUpdates10 blocks Windows Update service using an own service: Updates Guard. Also, it blocks Windows Update Medic Service ("WaasMedicSvc"), because the 'Medic' service can restore updates.

    StopUpdates10 is safe to use!

    StopUpdates10 does not delete files on your system, does not change permissions of Windows registry keys or files.

    Updates Guard

    Updates Guard is a system service, working in the background.

    It polls an activity of Windows update service. If Updates Guard detects the starting (or changing autostart) of Windows Update service (Wuauserv"), Guard will disable it.

    Default polling interval is 5 seconds. It may be customized using stopupdates10.ini file.

    Updates Guard is started automatically. It takes a little bit of system resources.

    You don't need to hold open the StopUpdates10 application.

    Your system is automatically protected by Updates Guard.

    Known Issues!

    BitDefender Total security and Checkpoint ZoneAlarm block access to the registry for StopUpdates10!

    You can see a message "Updates are partially disabled".

    Solution:

    1. Stop ZoneAlarm real-time monitoring.
    2. Disable updates using StopUpdates10.
    3. Activate ZoneAlarm real-time monitoring.

    How to uninstall StopUpdates10?

    Use a Windows standard way to uninstall applications.

    Windows 10

    1. Open Windows Start menu.
    2. Choose Settings.
    3. Click Apps & Features.
    4. Locate StopUpdates10 in the list.
    5. Ask 'Yes' if you see Windows 'User Account Control' question:
      Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?
    6. Choose 'Uninstall'.

    Also, you can open an alternative way to start uninstaller.

    Windows update will be automatically restored after uninstall!

    Disable Windows updates:

    StopUpdates10.exe /disable

    Enable Windows updates:

    StopUpdates10.exe /restore

    Pause updates:

    StopUpdates10.exe /pause

    This will pause updates until 11.11.2099

    You can set your date:
    StopUpdates10.exe /pause yyyymmdd
    yyyymmdd - year, month, day

    Example:
    StopUpdates10.exe /pause 20301231

    Resume updates

    StopUpdates10.exe /resume
